‘Wonderful’ Carlos Alcaraz with ‘jumping bean’ energy impresses Grand Slam legend
18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert was impressed by Carlos Alcaraz’s energy in his epic win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the French Open second round, saying “it’s wonderful to see”.
The teenager enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2022, becoming the third-youngest player to win a Masters title and the youngest ATP 500 champion.
However, the teenage sensation was on the verge of a shock French Open second-round defeat as the 19-year-old was forced to save a match point in the fourth set before rallying in the fifth set to s ensure passage to the third round.
Besides being two sets to one and saving match point, the sixth seed was also 0-3 in the fifth set.
Alcaraz rallied to go ahead with a break at 4-3. But Ramos-Vinolas, seeking his second victory against a Top 10 opponent at a major tournament, did not go down without a fight.
The 34-year-old Spaniard was able to get back to level before Alcaraz claimed another break thanks to an extraordinary defensive effort.
From there, the Murcian held on to his lead and held his nerve to beat fellow Spaniard Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-7(7), 5-7, 7-6(2), 6 -4.
Discussing the teenager’s win, Grand Slam great Chris Evert admitted she was impressed with the way Carlos Alcaraz performed on court and how he was able to maintain his energy levels even during an epic five sets.
The American told Eurosport: “This guy, he jumped out of the belly, probably.
“He’s like a jumping bean. He has an inexhaustible energy.
“Energy, charisma, joy and passion.
“He is so uninhibited in the way he expresses himself on the pitch.
“We haven’t seen him for so long, and it’s wonderful to see.”
